About Gerald D. Mann

Gerald D. Mann was born in modest surroundings, December 22, 1929, on a small farm near the town of Newport, near the coast of Eastern North Carolina. He grew up during the great depression, which ended only after the beginning of World War II. He graduated in a class of 24 students from Newport High School in 1948.

Gerald attended North Carolina State University, and graduated with honors in 1952 with a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering and a 2nd Lt. Commission in the U.S. Air Force.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1954, during the Korean War, and was stationed at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, in Dayton, Ohio, and was involved in Aircraft research and development. While in Dayton he met and Married Edna E. Jenkins, born and raised in Barburville, KY.

He attended Purdue University from 1954 to 1956 and graduated with a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering.  While at Purdue, his first child Teresa Lynn was born.

After Starting a small Civil Engineering Consulting firm for the Mobile Drilling Company, in Indianapolis, Indiana, he and Edna purchased the start up firm in 1956 and founded American Testing and Engineering Corporation, trade named ATEC Associates, Inc. There they performed civil engineering, testing and environmental services to the construction industry.  The firm rapidly grew to be nation wide, with over 50 offices and 1500 employees.  After 40 years of successful operation, the firm was sold in 1996.

In 1972 Gerald and Edna founded Mann Realty Company, now doing business under the name of Mann Properties, LLP, a Land Development and facilities Construction Company, presently owned by the family, Dave, Terri and Brian, as well as Gerald and Edna. Brian is currently the managing partner of the company. As of 2007, the company owns and manages over 1 ˝ million square feet of office, warehouse and retail lease spaces, and owns over 20 residential subdivisions in different stages of development.

Gerald and Edna have been active over the years in many communities, professional, civic and political organizations, and have served on many committees and boards. They are currently active in St. Lukes United Methodist Church, the Republican Party, Purdue University Presidents Council and others. Edna is active in Union College Board of Trustees, Past Board of Trustees for LaRue Carter Hospital, and Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. She was also Precinct Committee Woman and delegate to Republican National Conventions 3 times, and Gerald as an alternate. Gerald is active in Rotary International since 1960 and was President of Indianapolis Club from 1980-1981. Other past activities include, American Society of Civil Engineers, National Association of Independent Test Laboratories, Board of Directors of Indiana Classic Car Club of America, and other business and social organizations, such as Meridian Hills Country Club of Indianapolis, Royal Poinciana Country Club, Naples, FL, Naples Yacht Club, American Business Men’s Club, Indianapolis, IN, and Junto Business Men’s Club of Indianapolis, Indiana; Health and Education Financing Authority Board.

Awards and recognitions include; Purdue University’s most prestigious award, the Penicle Award in 2006; 1975 Purdue’s outstanding alumnus award; North Carolina States 2003 Outstanding Alumnus award; 1991 Master Entrepreneur of the year award by “Inc. Magazine; Indianapolis Business Journals Enterprise Award in 1988 and Freemason 33rd Degree Nomination in 2007.

Gerald and Edna are semi-retired, and spend most of their winters in Naples, Florida. Their hobbies include collecting and showing antique classic cars, traveling, boating and spending time with their four grandchildren, Jordan, Dylan, Ben and Nicholas.
